Ting å gjøre i Tromsø om vinteren: 10 arktiske opplevelser
From November to April, Tromsø turns into the adventure capital of the Arctic: polar night, snow-clad mountains, aurora-filled skies and fjords full of life. Here are the ten experiences we think no winter visitor should miss.
1. Chase the northern lights
The reason most people come — and Tromsø sits right inside the auroral oval. Join a budget-friendly bus chase, the all-inclusive chase with photographers or a small-group minibus safari. Guides follow the forecasts to wherever the sky is clear.
2. Drive your own husky team
Mush a team of eager huskies through the silent forest — and cuddle the puppies afterwards. Combine it with reindeer on the Dogsledding, Reindeer Feeding & Storytelling tour.
3. Ride a Sami reindeer sled
At the camp in Breivikeidet you glide behind reindeer as the Sami have for centuries, feed the herd of 120 and share bidos in the lavvu. Morning, afternoon and aurora evening departures are available.
4. Meet the whales
From late October to January, orcas and humpbacks hunt herring in the fjords. Our silent hybrid-electric whale watching gets you close — respectfully.
5. Open the throttle on a snowmobile
Beginner-friendly driving in a big open field is part of the Ultimate Arctic Bucketlist — dogsledding, snowmobiling and reindeer in one action-packed day.
6. Snowshoe through silent forests
No experience needed: the snowshoe and reindeer combo in Malangen takes you where no road reaches.
7. Cruise the fjords
See the city from the sea on the historic Hermes II — from a 1-hour photo cruise to a northern lights dinner cruise with a local tasting menu.
8. Get face to face with a bearded seal
On stormy days, Polaria — Norway's northernmost aquarium — delivers seals, panoramic aurora films and Arctic science for the whole family.
9. Hear midnight music in the cathedral
The Midnight Concert in Tromsø Cathedral fills Northern Europe's largest wooden cathedral with classical and Norwegian folk music — a serene end to an Arctic day.
10. Stay in the middle of it all
Base yourself at Enter Tromsø Apartments or the Enter Tromsø Exclusive Collection — walking distance to every departure point in this list, and First Hotels guests get exclusive discounts on tours.
Planning tips
- The aurora season runs September to early April; whales from late October to January — November to January offers both.
- Book the headline tours (northern lights, whales, huskies) before you arrive; they sell out in high season.
- Dress in wool layers — see our Arctic clothing guide for the details.
