Slik kler du deg i Arktis: Hva du bør ha på deg i Tromsø
"There is no bad weather, only bad clothing," as Norwegians say. Tromsø sits 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, but with the right layers you'll be comfortable whether you're chasing the northern lights at midnight or watching whales on an open deck. Here is our local guide to dressing for the Arctic.
The three-layer principle
- Base layer: wool, always wool. Merino long johns and a long-sleeved top transport moisture away and keep you warm even if you sweat. Avoid cotton — it stays damp and cold.
- Mid layer: an insulating layer of fleece or wool sweater, plus wool socks (two pairs on the coldest days).
- Outer layer: a wind- and waterproof jacket and trousers. In winter, an insulated parka; the wind chill matters more than the thermometer.
Don't forget the extremities
Most heat is lost where the body meets the weather: a warm hat covering the ears, mittens rather than gloves (fingers warm each other), a wool buff or scarf, and insulated winter boots with room for thick socks. Ice grips for your shoes are a cheap lifesaver on Tromsø's polished winter pavements.
What do the tours provide?
Good news: on most of our winter tours you don't need expedition gear of your own. Thermal suits are included on the all-inclusive northern lights chase and the Aurora Safari Minibus, while the reindeer camp at Breivikeidet hands out snowsuits, boot covers, hats and mittens. On the Hermes II cruises you'll find warm suits, blankets and heated lounges. Check the "What's included" list on each tour page.
Season by season
- Winter (Nov–Mar): full layering, insulated boots, and hand warmers in your pockets for aurora nights that can reach -15°C with wind.
- Spring & autumn: the weather turns on a coin — pack a shell layer and wool base even for city days.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): 10–15°C is normal. A warm sweater and windproof jacket are enough, but bring a hat for boat trips — the midnight sun doesn't heat the sea breeze.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Cotton next to the skin — damp cotton is the fastest way to get cold.
- Boots that fit too tightly — compressed toes freeze first.
- Underestimating standing still — aurora watching is cold work; you dress for waiting, not walking.
- Forgetting sunglasses — snow glare in February–April is intense.
Dressed right, the Arctic is not an ordeal but a playground. Pack wool, borrow our thermal suits, and enjoy the cold with a smile.
